Today you will notice that we have a new link at the top of the main page, one for Benchmark KB, our first formal banner on the site from an outside vendor! If you’re not familiar with this product, let me share a bit with you about this. Thanks to the folks at Interfix for supporting our site a bit, we do appreciate it!

The Benchmark KB is a joint venture between Interfix and AHDI. Interfix is a technology vendor, and the guys who run that company have been friends and colleagues of mine for a long time. I have a lot of respect for how they understand our world and our industry and how they listen to MTs to create meaningful tools for us. Benchmark is a web-based tool that includes several things.

I’ll share a bit about the actual tools in this program so you have an idea of what it is. I’m working on a video as well that will show folks how to use it, so stay tuned for that at some point in the near future.

Benchmark KB utilized the Stedman’s products. It includes the Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, Stedman’s Medical Speller, Quick Look Drug Book, and three Stedman’s specialty word books, which you select. You can add additional word books for a minimal fee as well. The AHDI Book of Style is also a part of the package, as are a list of lab values, and new medical terms as they are researched. The word books are automatically updated as updates come out from Stedman’s. One other really great tool here is a national physician database. How many times have you had a report where the dictator said “Send this to Sam Jones in San Antonio and include his address in the report” and have no idea what address to use? Now you can find that info here! Not only that, there is a function to copy and paste it right into your document. In addition to all of this, you also receive Associate Membership in AHDI, which gives you some electronic publications as well as discounts on some of the things they offer.

Okay, so what’s the downside? The downside, I guess, is that this is a subscription, which means you pay it every year. And, no, of course we don’t update our word books every year, but if you’re like me, when a new one comes out, you get it. I can’t remember a year in the last 15-20 years when I haven’t spent at least this much on reference materials. The world we live in is all about instant information. This is one way to get it and stay really current in our field.

Have any of you used Benchmark? If so, share your thoughts with others here!

Whether you decide to get the KB or not, I hope you will take a minute and browse their site. It just might be the next great tool in your MT Toolbox!
