Gearing up for MT Week

May 17-23, 2010, will be the week that we celebrate Medical Transcriptionist Week. The theme this year is “Why We Matter to Healthcare.”
It’s a week of celebration of who we are and what we do. How can we celebrate that?
I’d like to plan some special things for the week, and would like to hear from you with your ideas. I have a couple of word books that we plan to give away that week and the grand prize for the week will be a one-year subscription to the Benchmark Knowledge Base!
So, here in the comments section, let me hear your ideas on contests we can run and things we can do for the week. I’ll take a look at them and see what we can incorporate into the week. Stay tuned for the announcements on how you can be included in the drawing for the special gifts we will be giving away that week.

I know one thing I would love, but it really couldn’t be considered in any way a “prize” or in celebration of MT Week or anything like that. You know the HIPAA document you updated and provided us with? I’d REALLY like just a simplification of what it means to ME as an independent contractor. It’s a long document, most of which doesn’t SEEM to apply to “li’l ole me,” you know? I would just like to know what do I, in my own home office, need to do to be sure that if I were surprised with an audit, there wouldn’t be any MORE surprises, like fines or jail time or anything like that!
I guess that would be something we could do during that week, and I think it would be of benefit to probably most of us in this group. What do you think?

Sherry, that’s an idea. Actually one of the things the HIPAA4MT site will be doing is starting compliance training as well as offering sample policies and procedures for sale starting in May. Maybe one of the “prizes” we can do is registration to some of those training courses? Or maybe a set of sample P&Ps? Let me give that one some thought! As a separate FYI, even ICs are considered “business associates” in most cases, unless you do not contract directly with the healthcare provider. If your contract is with a service, then you are a subcontractor, or what the rule calls an agent, so it is a little different for that group.

Wow! This will be exciting. I’m a newbie to the MT world. So I am always looking for ways to learn and get off to a great start. Ideas that come to mind are:
Write your funniest, most prolific, etc experiences (50 words or so) as an MT. It can be in the form of poems, experience, crazyiest dictation. At the end of the week the forum can vote on their most favorite to win a prize in the form of books, memberships, office tools, etc.
Word scramble contests – at the end of the day the winner is announced for that day.
Submit your best MT tips
Just some ideas to get the ball rolling.
Looking forward to it.

I like that Sherry. It could even be designed in a short PowerPoint presntation. Something visual, and later you can reference certain slides as a checklist if you are preparing for an audit.
