Do You Have a Goal for Getting Credentialed?
For many medical transcriptionists, the goal is to become an RMT or a CMT. It is something we often to do prove to ourselves we can do it. Sometimes it means an increase in our pay. Often, it is simply the personal satisfaction of knowing that you hold the professional credential for our industry. Whatever your reason, it’s a good one.
Last week during our MT Week celebrations, one of the winners of the credential study course offered to give her prize back to someone who is closer to being ready to take a course and then go on to take the exam. Sonya still has some time left in school and wanted to give this gift to someone who is ready to dig in, take a credential study course, and go out and get that credential. What a generous thing on her part!
Sonya, thank you so much for this idea. What a wonderful thing for you to do. We will celebrate with you as well when you finish your schooling and are ready to step up and take the course and get your credential!
So, with this post, let’s see if we can give this one away to someone. You can be eligible for this drawing by posting a comment here telling us why you’d like to take this course. From those who comment, we will draw a winner on Wednesday morning and post it! Good luck to everyone! Remember, if you don’t comment, you can’t win!
P.S. – Be sure you check back tomorrow for the announcement of our grand prize winner from last week’s activities!

Since I’m already taking this course and it is long ago paid for, don’t put me in the drawing, but I did definitely want to thank Sonya for her great kindness in doing this. I don’t remember for certain, but don’t you have to be working as an MT for 2+ years before you are allowed to take the exam? If that’s the case, then Sonya has a while to wait…maybe by that time someone will have found a way to give Sonya a “credential study course scholarship” for the goodness in her heart that she is demonstrating now.
On a more personal note to Sonya, have you put together a good Stedman’s word book library yet? My books are not the most current, but in June I should be getting a more up to date book that covers all the specialties in one book, so if you are interested, I could certainly forward on to you quite a few of my current Stedman’s word books for you to have for a basis for your library if you are in need? Just let me know!

Sherry, what a great offer and how nice of you!
The criteria say that you can (and should IMO) take the RMT right when you graduate from school. It is the CMT where the recommendation is two years of acute care experience before you take the exam. I am sure Sonya will receive this blessing back down the road!

What a truly selfless act Sonya!
I would love to be in the drawing. I am currently an RMT and need the push to go for it when it comes to taking the CMT exam. Maybe this is just what I need.

Like Sherry, I do not want to be included in the drawing; I am currently taking a credentialing course and am scheduled to take the RMT exam next month. I also wanted to thank Sonya for her sweet and generous offer. Kathy’s right, Sonya…you will reap blessings for your kindness down the road!

I, too, think that sherry’s act is one of complete unselfishness. I just graduated from a 1-year MT program with Honors. I will be trying for High Honors shortly. I have yet to find a job. I wish to take the RMT exam for personal satisfaction and to possible impress potential employers.
Please include me in the drawing.
Thanks again Sherry!!

What a wonderful display of spirit by Sonya to pay it forward.
I would like to be included in the drawing as I have a deadline in September for my job to have passed my CMT exam. I have had some personal issues in the past few months that have hindered me from focusing on this but I am now making it a priority.
Good luck to everyone! We share the same goals and can find comfort in knowing that we are not alone in this endeavor.

Forgive me!
I pushed the submit button before proofing my comments.
Sherry should be capitalized and possible should be possibly.
Not very impressive for an Honors student

I have already won the credential study course from last weeks MT puzzlers. Thank you Kathy! I just wanted to recognize Sonya for her kindness and generosity in giving her prize away! Sonya, your actions just reinforce in me the joy and pride I feel for choosing a career path that encompasses some of the best traits of human nature: The caring, compassion, and drive to do the right thing by our fellow human beings. Thank you Sonya!

Hi Kathy (& everybody!)
I have been studying to take the RMT for some time but keep hitting snags. Recently, I was taking the CMT/RMT credentialing course offered on the AHDI website. I was 9 weeks into the 12 week course when I decided to take a much needed break from studying. I went to work in my rose garden. Long story–short: I was playing “tug-of-war” with a bamboo root when it “let go,” and I flew backward and broke my right arm–classic Colles fracture. We tried setting it in a cast, but 3 weeks later had to undergo surgery (ORIF). I am working on regaining my typing speed (which needed work anyway!) and am now ready to try again. I have not been employed as a Medical Transcriptionist yet because I feel the credentialing is essential–not only to stand out for potential employers but to reinforce my ability to be not just good at this job, but VERY good. Sorry to be so long but I get passionate talking about this!
Sherry, your considerate re-gifting of this course is one of the top reasons that I want to be affiliated with this profession and why I remain committed to make Medical Transcription my career.

HOW EMBARRASSING! SONYA, not Sherry! Please forgive me!

John,
You have Sonya and Sherry confused. It is Sonya who is donating her prize, not Sherry.

Hi guys;
I just wanted to add my voice to everyone else’s.
I am a little lost as to who it is that’s giving back right now, be it Sonya or Sherry, but I do agree that it is a wonderful thing and truly a generous spirit.
I, myself, recently made the decision (actually, only last week) that it was high time that I started on my way to credentialling. I graduated from my MTTS in 2008 and I’ve been working as an MT here in Barbados since that time.
I have had the honour of being associated with some fantastic teachers, mentors, and cheerleaders (some of whom will see this comment, and hopefully will know who you are without mentioning their names) along the way.
I have been associated with many firsts in this field here in Barbados – I attended the first training school, I’ve worked with one of the first companies to set up here, I was one of the first Barbadians in our company’s QA team, and I’d like to add the CMT credentials to that list, not just for me, but to make it easier, at least mentally, for everyone else who will follow (goals always seem more achievable when you see someone who’s been there and done that).
So, thank you to all of you experienced and wise mentors who have coached me. I hope I do justice to your faith in me, and I hope I can encourage someone else the same way that you have and are encouraging me.

It did get confusing in here today! Let me help! Sonya won the credential study course, she gave it back to be given to someone else. Then Sherry offered, because Sonya had done such a generous thing and is in school, to give her some of her older reference books to help get her started. Hope that helps!
Sherrie, good to see you adding to the conversation! What she didn’t tell you guys is that she went to school full time, five days a week, in a classroom setting, all while being 8 1/2 months pregnant! She stopped a bit, had her baby, and carried on! She’s definitely a trailblazer!

All I can say is WOW! You guys do not know how much the kind words have meant to me!
Without going through a looong story. I just wanted to say thank you. Last Thursday, I was laid off from my job without notice. I was totally devastated! I am a single parent of 3 and 2 dogs. I had just started my course with MTEC in January. Funny thing is I started this course for this very same reason. Tomorrow is not promised to us. I wanted something to fall back on for the sake of my children and I love medicine and all it stands for – caring for people. So of course I was elated to win the Credentialing Course, but knew that I couldn’t take it anytime soon. Plus there’s a big push to find new members to add to the MT world right now. And for this to just be sitting for the next several months isn’t doing anyone any good. Ok, so I cried a couple of days, got that out my system, and now trying to see a light at the end of this tunnel. Either I can sit here and wallow in the mess or make it work for me. So I plan on continuing my courses, finish my goal and use these MT skills to the fullest. But in the meantime I wanted someone else who was really in need of it now to benefit. That’s my therapy. So I’m turning this negative into a positive. I’ll make the best of it now. Heck I got all the time in the world now – I better make an A’ no excuse.
Yes the Steadman’s (or any tools for that matter) can be used now, and thank you so much for offering! I don’t care how it looks, as long as I can read it. It’s the inside that matters.
To those who may now be on the fence as to what to do about enrolling: Don’t wait! Again, tomorrow is not promised to us. Just when you think you are comfortable, life throws us a curve ball. It what you do with it that matters. Even if you don’t ever use it afterwords, have a backup.
To Kathy: You are wonderful! Thank you for everything. Keep up the good work!
To those who have been around a while. Please continue to post your experiences and tips. They are so encouraging and inspiring. I have a notebook full of MT tips from you guys and have used them already in some of my assignments. I so love this world of Medical Transcription!
Back to the books.

Sonya, what a great reminder for all of us. As you know from our e-mail exchange, I too was laid off in the last six months. We do not have a promise of tomorrow. What we DO have, folks, is a chance to be the linchpin that I’ve told you about and go out and DO something with what we are given. Create something, do something awesome, make it count, and just SHIP!

I am nearing the end of my MT course at Andrews and would love to be entered for the drawing for the credential course. What a wonderful selfless thing for Sonya to do!

Nice to see the spirit of giving in the group! I would rather not be put into the drawing this time. Best of luck to those who are in contention for it.

I have been working as a Medical Transcriptionist for about 9 months and would love to be entered into the drawing for the credential course. Sonya – thank you for doing this!

I am new to all of this. Being credentialed, is this something I can start now before taking the RMT Exam. How is this different from being certified? Also, you are saying I could get the CMT Review Guide (if I can find a reduced price book) in place of the RMT and that would also cover everything I need to study for the RMT?
