Medical Transcription: Where do You Make Your Investments?
I am writing this post after having spent a wonderfully relaxing day. I got up late, had coffee, relaxed a bit. Then I spent the afternoon getting my nails done and having a pedicure. Back home, and it was time to sit back and relax, spend some time with my husband, and read a book I started last night. Why am I telling you this? Because today was an investment in ME. All too often we forget to do that for ourselves.
Medical transcriptionists are often looking for where to make our investments. We buy word books, we may buy the Benchmark KB production, we think we need to have all of the latest reference books that come out, we may invest in AHDI association membership. Then we look at technology and find we just have to invest in a good abbreviation expander, or maybe some electronic references.
All of these investments are important to our success. Most MTs I know eventually end up with the entire of set of what we fondly call the “Rainbow Books,” meaning Stedman’s Word Book Series. A good abbreviation expander is worth the money you invest because it allows you to increase your earning potential.
At what point, though, do we start investing in US as people? Life cannot be all about work, AHDI, or medical transcription. There needs to be a balance, it is how we maximize our ability to do great work. I remember several years ago someone asking me who I was. I thought that was a strange question, and began to rattle off all of the things related to my job, my work in the association, etc., etc. With a very serious face, the person looked at me and said “Your job is not who you are, it’s what you do.” What a sobering thought. I will always be thankful that he had the boldness to point that out to me as it really was a beginning for me in looking at finding a better balance in life. I don’t always get it right, but it’s sure better than it was five years ago.
REMEMBER THIS:
God will not ask what kind of car you drove, but He will ask how many people you drove who did not have transportation.
God will not ask the square footage of your house, but He will ask how many people you welcomed into your home.
God will not ask about the clothes you had in your closet, but He will ask how many you helped to clothe.
God will not ask what your highest salary was, but He will ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.
God will not ask what your job title was, but He will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.
God will not ask how many friends you had, but He will ask how many people to whom you were a friend.
God will not ask in what neighborhood you lived, but He will ask how you treated your neighbors.
God will not ask about the color of your skin, but He will ask about the content of your character.
God will not ask about your social status, but He will ask what kind of class you displayed.
God will not ask how many material possessions you had, but He will ask if they dictated your life.
God will not ask how much overtime you worked, but He will ask if your overtime work was for yourself or for your family.
God will not ask how many promotions you received, but He will ask how you promoted others.
God will not ask what you did to help yourself, but He will ask what you did to help others.
God will not ask what you did to protect your rights, but He will ask what you did to protect the rights of others.
God will not ask you about your body type, but He will ask about the content of your character.
God will not ask how many times your deeds matched your words, but He will ask how many times they did not.
So for today, I hope you will stop and think about where you are doing your investing. Each of you is awesome and you can do great things. Just be sure in that process that you are also taking care of yourself and doing something special for YOU! How about it? What do you do to step away from the world of MT and invest in YOU?

This was such an encouraging post. Very thought provoking ideas. As I sit here and contemplate what to do next after a lay off and working 9-5 for over 25 years, many things mentioned above we often take for granted until we are faced with an issue. But if we ourselves are not strong then we can’t make goals for the future and progress through life and we’re no good to the ones we love. And when we put others first in our lives, then we are rewarded 10 times over which brings about a peace that nobody can take away. Thank you Kathy.
