Next week is the annual convention and expo (ACE) for AHDI. I will be attending and wanted to share with you some of the things that are happening there. I would also love your feedback on things you’d like to hear about! Here’s my plan so far.

Tuesday and Wednesday, August 3-4

I will arrive sometime Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday during the day, the AHDI Board of Directors will have their meeting. Depending on flight schedules, I may stop in here after I get checked in. Tuesday night is the start of the House of Delegates (HOD) meeting. As I understand it, the HOD will continue into Wednesday as well. I imagine this is going to be an historic HOD meeting. With the discussion centered, according to the published material I’ve seen so far, around the Blueprint for Great Governance that we discussed some last week, it appears we may come out of these meetings with an entirely different association. The discussion I have seen so far show some pretty wide divisions in how members feel about this, and we are a passionate group. The actual resolution that is supposed to be voted on has yet to be published, which doesn’t allow any real time for membership discussion. I also saw, and signed on in support, to an emergent resolution this week asking that this vote be delayed until there are more details and time for membership input. Where it will all end up at this point is anyone’s guess. The AHDI Lounge blog post yesterday by Jay Vance suggested that perhaps we are asking the wrong question and that before we discuss structure once again perhaps we should have a concensus about our purpose. Should the plan as I’ve seen it pass, we will have only “districts” going forward, no House of Delegates, and the State/Regional and local components that we have now will be dissolved into the districts, including their treasuries. This will allow the districts to plan activities and meetings and focus the regions on the four topics that are identified as priority. The resolution submitted this week simply says there isn’t enough information or time to really have meaningful dialogue with the membership to make an informed decision on this significant change.

If you are interested in attending this session virtually, it will be available via webinar. Register here for the Leadership Summit

Thursday, August 5

Educational sessions start here with the first keynote titled “Too Busy For Your Own Good.” I believe this is one I can use! :) Following the keynote, there is a long break to visit exhibitors. I have a few appointments set up during this time and will be exploring how the changes in legislative rules and technology may impact our profession.

I really haven’t selected a session to attend in the afternoon, although there are several: Reality ER, Electronic Communications and Health Reform: The Autobahn of Change – Where are our Safety Belts,  and a session on grammar and punctuation.  The later afternoon sessions will cover the QA Best Practices document recently released by AHDI, a cardiology update, and a sessi0n on how to navigate technology changes. The afternoon ends with a session on new pulmonary interventions, one of HIT and Interoperability, and one on effective and efficient productivity and quality monitoring.

Friday, August 6

Friday opens with the annual business meeting and industry update. I am hoping this session will tell more about how the organization will be addressing things like the new meaningful use guidelines to position medical transcription in a position of relevance. Following that, I plan to attend a session titled “Transcription – Continued Relevance in Clinical Documentation Today,” presented by Lynn Kosegi. I have been following Lynn’s blog and find her insight to be great about our industry. The next session is a challenge for me. The schedule has two speakers speaking on topics I want to hear at the same time. I wonder how I can clone myself for this? It will be a tough choice whether to go hear Scott Edelstein speak on “Healthcare Documentation in a New Compliance Age” or Gary David on “MT Intelligence: The Value of MTs in HIT Implementation.” Scott is an attorney who has presented before at AHDI and always offers wonderful information. Gary is with Bentley College and has been working on a research project about our industry for two or three years now. It’s a good thing that these sessions are recorded as I will purchase the one I don’t get to attend!

The sessions on Friday after lunch will provide one hot topic, in my opinion, about Natural Language Processing. There is also what is sure to be a great MT Compliance Workshop being done by Brenda Hurley.

Saturday, August 7

My schedule for Saturday includes the Educators Workshop. This workshop will be addressing changes to AHDI’s Model Curriculum as well as changes to the RMT and CMT exams. I’m sure this is a topic that will interest readers here. I also look forward to information here that will let us be sure we are offering the right kind of continuing education for those of you who read here. The Awards brunch is also on this day. I will miss the last keynote of the meeting as my flight leaves Saturday evening. I do hope to attend the session for CMTs/RMTs that is titled “Equipping Leaders with John Maxwell.” John Maxwell is one of my favorite authors so that one should be good.

Now, over to you. What sessions in the above interest you the most? If you are attending, let’s find a time to get together while there! I will be posting blogs while at the meeting at least daily with a wrap up of the information posted. You can also follow information from me about the meeting on Twitter, and my updates on Twitter are always on the right side of the home page on this site.

Let’s have some discussion!
