Medical Transcription in the Blogosphere Weekend Reading
This Friday post will give you a few things to take a look at and enjoy. Grab your coffee and let’s take a break. Here are some of the things I’ve found this week, some related to our industry, and some related to life in general.
Webinar
Before we move to our weekend reading, don’t forget that this is the week to get signed up for Gary David’s webinar! Understanding some ideas from an “outsider” to our industry is a good thing and his presentation is one you won’t want to miss. Plan an hour out of your day on September 24 and join us!
Comments on Proposed HIPAA/HITECH Changes
This past Monday was the deadline for comments on the proposed changes to the HIPAA regulations. You will find interesting reading here. First, AHDI/MTIA comments, where they addressed the need for clarification about the definition of a subcontractor as well as a brief comment about the estimates related to cost, although all that is really addressed on cost is that perhaps the cost of attorney fees is more than stated and that administrative costs should be included. It was interesting to me that the two associations have stated they believe the majority of business associates are already compliant. I’m surprised by that statement simply because I am still hearing from small business owners and independent contractors every day that they have no idea where to start. I’m sure that larger services are compliant, however, there are a lot of small businesses and independent contractors still struggling with this one. The Advocacy Office for the Small Business Association also submitted comments, which addresses their feeling that the cost estimates are way too low. They also question whether HHS really followed procedure for being sure that costs were properly analyzed. Their analysis speaks to both the issues for small practices as well as to those of business associates and is well worth the read.
Everybody Should Wear Sunscreen
This 5-minute video was a great message for this week. It was given at a class graduation several years ago, and yet the message is still so pertinent today. Take a few minutes and watch it.
What is Holding You Back?
We make goals for our life all the time. And yet, sometimes we just get stuck. We don’t accomplish what we intend to do. We rely on “some day” to get things done. Tim Brownson is a life coach who blogs at the site called “A Daring Adventure.” His message today sunk in hard for me and I felt it worth share. Take some time to read What is Holding You Back and see how you can apply it for yourself.
Did you see things here you enjoyed? I hope so. My weekend is filled with a children’s birthday party and family things. I hope yours is great as well!

Thanks, Kathy. I really enjoyed reading Tim’s blog and also seeing the video. I even saved a copy of the video to my computer to watch over and over. You know, the simplest things are the best philosophies! Basically, too, I think what Tim was talking about are “self-fulfilling prophecies.” The minute you tell yourself “I can’t,” then you can’t. On the other hand, if you say “maybe I can,” you are still actually being negative and setting yourself up for failure or for not even trying because deep down you still believe “I can’t.” To stretch it to the farthest limit, the minute you say “I can,” it’s only a matter of beginning. There ARE things in my life that I haven’t done, but mainly it seems like “when I have the time, I don’t have the money; when I have the money, I don’t have the time.” I’m sure a lot of people feel that way. I’d love to just travel and meet people and experience life EVERYWHERE that is different from anything I’ve ever known. It would be scary, but I bet that I’d never do anything more interesting in my life. Unfortunately, my “sensibility” and my “roots” and my “work ethic” will keep me tied to a job so that I can continue to help pay for a house and other monthly bills. I don’t think that my husband is as adventurous as I am, either. I think he’d RATHER stay in one place and never even meet other people. I think that he sets very high standards for himself, and when he applies the same standards to others, they just fail….and he’d rather not be around people like that, I guess. I think that people of all kinds are so interesting! I cannot imagine anything MORE boring than being in a room or a town or a country or a world where people were SO alike that you didn’t even have to open your mouth to speak because you already knew what each other was thinking–and agreed with it! I like to learn, and I actually LIKE to be different from other people! I’d love to meet other people (especially women) who weren’t afraid to try new things, even in their 80s! Maybe they could help me to work up the courage to join them in something they were doing…crazier things have happened. I know that sunscreen is a healthy thing….but to tell the truth, I hate the stuff! That guy can keep his sunscreen! LOL

There are so many things in life that we just don’t do and save for “some day.” I’m trying to stop doing that in my life and live so that I have no regrets at the end of life. It’s tougher than it sounds!

I was having a little pity party by myself and decided to have some ice cream with hot fudge topping and watch the video Kathy posted. Thanks, Kathy. I needed that. Perfect day to watch it.
